In Expeditionary Learning Schools, expeditions are a primary way to address curriculum. Expeditions are based on a compelling topic derived from Georgia Performance Standards. An exciting characteristic of Expeditions is the belief that student products are created for a real purpose and audience beyond teachers and families. For example, last year Clairemont 1st graders investigated American heroes, museums, and folk art.  Students did fieldwork at multiple museums and learned from local experts.   After becoming experts themselves, the first graders shared their products with the Decatur Community by setting up an American History museum in the Dekalb History Center. They were excited to educate the community about many American heroes.

Letter from the Principal
ewheeler.jpgDear Clairemont Elementary Families,

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year at Clairemont Elementary. I am thrilled to be a part of your school family and looking forward to meeting each of you and your children in these upcoming weeks. In many ways I feel like I am coming home; I started my teaching career in Decatur at Clairemont Elementary and then served Oakhurst Elementary as their Instructional Coach for four years. This past year, I was the Southeast School Designer for Expeditionary Learning, where I worked closely with Decaturís three K-3 schools, a K-5 school in Clayton County, and an elementary and middle school in Chattanooga. All of these experiences have prepared me for taking on this new step.

I have had the privilege of working with Clairemont staff and families directly and indirectly over the past ten years. Clairemont has grown into a fully implementing Expeditionary Learning school with a staff and family community that is committed to excellence and student success. This past year, I watched your teachers and students engage in meaningful and challenging expeditions, and I look forward to what the future holds.

Along with the other two K-3 schools, we have been chosen for the third year in a row to host a National Expeditionary Learning Site Visit. This is a huge accomplishment and one of which we all should be proud.

I am getting settled and prepared for a wonderful school year, and I look forward to supporting and leading our work. I am sure I will see many of you within the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime, enjoy the last part of your summer!

Sincerely,

Erin Wheeler
